The GMALL Debate 2018:

“The motion before this meeting is that OUR DEMOCRACY IS IN PERIL.”

Past months have seen the publication of several books and articles warning of threats to liberal democracy - e.g., The People Vs. Democracy, by Yascha Mounk, How Democracies Die, by Steven Levitsky & Daniel Ziblatt, Democracy Is Dying by Natural Causes, by James Traub in Foreign Policy.  Their main theme is that in several countries people have felt that the elites in their respective political systems have not been listening to the people and reflecting popular views in public policy.  Arising from popular discontent opportunities have opened up for autocratic leaders to sweep aside institutions that exist to protect the rule of law, individual rights and freedom of speech.  Is what is happening in Venezuela, Turkey, Poland, Hungary, the Philippines and elsewhere also beginning to happen here in the United States?  Is Donald Trump doing serious damage to American liberal democracy?  Is our democracy in peril?

Moderated by Steven Sinding, engaging in oratorical combat one of our gladiators will propose and the other will oppose the motion, following which the debate will be opened to the floor for audience participation.
